This is so lovely for so many reasons. Certainly, the beauty of the carving, as well as the beauty of the subject, are outstanding. I believe this is Athena, Goddess of Wisdom, since she is so many times pictured with this type of lunate earring. The similarity to other carvings really stops there. Her expression is quite defined; her eye is open .... harder to carve effectively, in my opinion, than closed eyes. The artist carver has worked the relief in a rich deep cream, almost a light cafe-au-lait on the butterscotch background. Excellent translucency. The art of the carver bringing in a cloudlike haze on the sides and around the head is unique and fascinating, making this even more ethereal with a feeling of mysticism. The bezel is as it should be... unobtrusive. It is the very old style that, although it can be used as a pendant or brooch, It has no safety catch. I have never worn this. I simply love to display it for its art sake. This is nearly 2 inches long and nearly 1 and 1/2 inch wide. In truly Very Good to Excellent Condition.
